In the current context of globalisation and growing crises around the world, an increasing number of people with a migrant background need psychotherapeutic treatment, intercultural psychotherapy may well become the rule rather than the exception. Therefore, Psychotherapists are challenged to adapt to such a context. Intercultural psychotherapy refers here to the therapeutic work between psychotherapists and patients stemming from different cultural contexts, meaning that language- and culture-based understanding is often hampered considerably. Overcoming these barriers requires certain competencies such as working with a qualified interpreter. In this symposium, international experts from the field of intercultural psychotherapies will provide insights into the theory and practice of intercultural work with patients suffering from mental disorders. Within this context, interdisciplinary specialists describe their work, share relevant experiences and formulate recommendations. The first speaker Dinesh Bhugra will focus on “Challenges in intercultural therapies“, the second speaker Sofie Bäärnhielm will talk on “Adopting an intercultural perspective in mental healthcare”, while the third speaker Marianne Kastrup will talk on “Gender-specific aspects of intercultural psychotherapy for traumatised female refugees” and the last speaker Meryam Schouler-Ocak will complete the symposium with a presentation on “The role of interpreters in intercultural psychotherapy”. All presentations will be discussed with the plenum.
