Prof. Dr. Andrew J. M. Boulton
Andrew J.M. Boulton, MD, DSc, FICP, FACP, FRCP is Professor of Medicine at the University of Manchester and a Consultant Physician at Manchester Royal Infirmary in the United Kingdom and a visiting Professor of Medicine at the University of Miami (Florida) School of Medicine in the United States. He was recently appointed president of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Dr. Boulton’s research focuses on diabetic nephropathy, diabetic neuropathy, and diabetic foot disease. A leader in establishing diabetic foot care as a medical subspecialty, he has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health, the British Diabetes Association, the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD), and the Wellcome Trust. He chaired the American Diabetes Association (ADA) working groups that published the 2017 position statement on Diabetic Neuropathy and the 2008 Comprehensive Diabetic Foot Exam. Dr. Boulton is president of the Worldwide Initiative for Diabetes Education. He is an associate editor of Diabetes Care and a past editor of Diabetic Medicine. He is a past president of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and EFSD, was the founding Chair of the EASD Diabetic Foot Study Group and was EASD’s Director of International Postgraduate Education. Dr. Boulton received the first International Diabetic Foot Award in 1995, the Edward James Olmos Award for Advocacy in Amputation Prevention in 2005, and the ADA Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes in 2008. He has authored more than 500 articles and eight books on diabetes complications.
